What is a Filter Press?
WHAT IS A FILTER PRESS AND HOW DOES IT WORK
The Westlake Environmental Filter Press (FP) is a fixed volume, batch pressure filter that separates liquids and solids. A set of filter plates with clothes are sandwiched together in series. Once the plates are compressed together hydraulically, sludge is pumped into the center of the filter plates with all chambers being filled simultaneously. The solids are retained on the filter clothes, which act as a depth filter for liquid/solid separation, while clean fluid (Filtrate) travels thru to the discharge manifold and exits the press. When the filter plates are full, the cycle is complete, and the filter press is opened to discharge the solids off each plate.
WHAT’S INVOLVED
The filter press consists of a head and follower that contain a series of plates that are supported by side bars or overhead beams. The head serves as a fixed end to which the feed and filtrate pipes are connected. The follower moves along the side bars and presses the plates together during the filtration cycle by a hydraulic or mechanical mechanism. Each plate includes filter cloth on both sides and, once pressed together, they form a series of chambers. The plates have a centered feed port that passes through the entire length of the filter press so that all the chambers of the plate pack are connected together. Likewise, four corner ports connect all the plates and collect the filtrate in a “closed discharge” towards outlets that are located on the same side as the feed inlet.

What is a Chemical Addition System?
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Westlake Environmental Chemical Addition Systems (CAS) are designed to thoroughly mix a chemical recipe to establish coagulation, flocculation, pH adjustment or metals precipitation, depending on the application. We design and manufacture a complete line of systems to meet your needs.
OPERATION
Raw water enters the Chemical Addition System where chemicals are fed and thoroughly mixed in each chamber prior to discharge. Each chamber includes a chemical pump, mixer, and pH probe. A control panel is also provided to fully automate the system, requiring minimal operator interface. Equipment is completely assembled and tested prior to shipping, ready for installation on a concrete pad.
TERMS
Coagulation: Gelling or lumping of particles, typically a colloid, to form a pin floc. In Coagulation a chemical is added that produces positive charges to neutralize the negative charges. The particles then stick together, forming larger particles that are easier to remove via settling or floating.
Flocculation: A process similar to coagulation but differs in that it is used as a complimentary step to develop an even larger, robust particle. Flocculation is almost always used in conjunction with and preceded by coagulation. The process is generally accomplished by slow mixing to allow the particles to come into contact with one another and bind, enhancing the settling or floating process.
pH Adjustment: pH is the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. A pH of 7 is neutral; 0-7 is the acidic range and 7-14 is the alkaline range. pH adjustment is required for a variety of applications such as metal precipitation, correcting pH for polymer and coagulant use, emulsion breaking and pH adjustment prior to city discharge.
Metals Precipitation: Most common metals that are dissolved in a waste stream can be precipitated from their ionic state by raising the pH. Once the metals precipitate and form solids, they can easily be removed by float or settling methods.

What is an Emulsion Cracking System?
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Westlake Environmental Emulsion Cracking System (ECS) is highly efficient in removing free, dispersed and emulsified hydrocarbon products from a waste stream. The model ECS is a modified Oil Coalescing Separator that includes a chemical treatment step both upstream and downstream of the separator for removal of emulsified oils. Lowering the pH of the incoming water destabilizes the petroleum hydrocarbon oil water ionic bond, allowing the oil to become free. The free oil is then removed in the oil coalescing chamber of the ECS tank. The system is completely integrated, and skid mounted.
OPERATION
The three-stage treatment system is complete with gravity flow through a single skid. The system includes chemical feed systems, mixers, pH controllers and controls for all mechanical devices. Raw water enters the initial chamber of the ECS where a pH adjustment and/or an emulsion breaking chemistry are added and mixed to break the emulsions. Oil/water separation begins in this chamber. Water leaving the initial chamber continues to the Oil Coalescing Separator portion of the tank where the free oil coalesces and is removed. Clean water continues to the final chamber where the pH is neutralized prior to discharge. Operation is completely automatic and requires only periodic calibration and check to ensure proper operation.

What is a Dissolved Air Flotation Clarifier?
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Westlake Environmental Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) clarifier is a very versatile and effective tool for cleaning industrial wastewater. It efficiently removes suspended solids, oil and grease, metals as well as the suspended biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from a waste stream. Removal rates in excess of 95% are common. Some installations report 99.9% FOG and TSS reduction.
